Small Space Pantry DIY

Happy weekend all! I found this awesome small space DIY that I wanted to share with you..

Us small space dwellers all know how limited space is and we often have to sacrifice delicious things like pantries to accommodate the space we do have. Well now no more! Style Editor, Michael Penney, and Design Editor, Joel Bray, show us how to transform an Ikea wardrobe into a sexy kitchen pantry; perfect for small spaces.

Push-pin Message Board

For the doors they added a push-pin message board/tea towel holder by covering ceiling tile with natural fabric and double-sided taping it to the inside of the door

Accessorize

Adding cook books, spice jars, baskets and storage containers and the wardrobe is successfully fitted as a pantry. They also had space to store cutlery and plates in the two drawers. Watch the video on House and Home TV.

360 Sq. Ft. Second-Floor Pied-à-Terre

This September House & Home published their small space issue, which I always anticipate because they always have tons of great idea and small space solutions. There was one feature that stood out to me because of how efficiently the designer, Deb Nelson, used her space. Deb found a perfect location for her new home decor boutique in Halifax and decided to carve out a comfortable place to call home above it.

She faced many challenges because the space was only 360 sq. ft., but she did an excellent job of making her second-floor-apartment feel bright and cozy. Let's walk through some of her tips.

Problem: An immovable load-bearing wall.

Small Space Solution: Keep the wall. lose the door. Deb could not remove the wall between her kitchen and her expanded kitchen counter/storage space because she already knocked down one wall in her tiny apartment.  To get around this she decided to maintain the flow of her kitchen by removing the door between her kitchen and her new kitchen extension. Great tip!

Problem: No room for a conventional bed.

Small Space Solution: Customize your own. Deb used two oversized storage benches as the frame to her sleeping quarters. With the addition of a mattress she created a customized bed that could doubles as a sofa when she has guests. She just adds a few pillows and she is set.

Problem: Not enough work space.

Small Space Solution: Multitasking furniture. Almost all the furniture in Deb's 360 sq. ft. gem is multifunctional and moveable. The coffee table folds up; chairs and stools can be pushed aside; and the gatefold dining table can be expanded with the addition of a leaf. This gives Deb the space she needs to spread out and discuss plans with clients.

It has been a fun week Small Space Dwellers. Be bold, live well and have a WONDERFUL weekend!

Small Space Crush: Lindsay Mens Craig - Bold Style in 800 Sq. Ft.

I have fallen in love! Lindsay Mens Craig's 800 Sq. Ft. Condo is the very essence of bold style in a small space. She has not shied away from colour or impact. Large scale print, over-sized art, bold colour, dynamic pattern on pattern... Oh YUM! Ok, let me get a grip as my heart goes pitter patter!

You can't tell from the picture but her coffee table is actually 6 feet long, and in a small space some might thing that this is way to large, but it works. She's added reflective surfaces, mirrors and the right amount a perfectly sized furniture to help make her space feel large and airy.

Brace yourself as you peruse through Lindsay's 800 sq. ft. eclectic small space. Full tour can be found on Style at Home.

BUSTED: 4 Small Space Myths

As I have been taking this small space journey, it has also been a realization about the myths of what you can and cannot do with a small space. Anyone who knows me knows that I don't like the words 'can't'. That word just shouldn't exist. There is always a CAN, you just have to know HOW... WHEN... and perhaps WHERE. Same rule should apply when it comes to small spaces!

So I have decided to expose the lies and bring you the top 4 Small Space Myths.

Myth No. 1 - Don't Use Large Furniture

When it comes to small spaces it should not be about avoiding large furniture but about finding the RIGHT sized furniture for your space. It is far better to have the fewest number of larger scale pieces than many small items because fulling your space with too many pieces will make it feel clutter. Choose the largest sized pieces that fit your space. So this might mean buying that six foot sofa you've been eyeing and simply complimenting it with one small scale armchair. Just use this in moderation. Introduce large pieces in small quantities.

Myth No. 2 - Living Small Means Living with Very Little

Living small simply means living in a smaller square footage than others; that's it! Most small space dwellers I know have tons of stuff (*cough* *cough* I will not expose myself here...lol). Living in a small space does not mean that you have to live as a minimalist. Feel free! Fill your space with the things you love!

Oh... wait! Maybe I should put the breaks on that last statement. Yes, over filling your space will make any home look small whether it is 800 sq. ft. or 3000 sq. ft., so understand that I am not talking about fulling your space with clutter but rather learning how to really use your space and create a stylish and resourceful home. Find creative ways to incorporate your loved items into your decor/the design of space by using walls, creating zones and using scale and balance.

Myth No. 3 - Only Use Neutral Colors

Of course, light colours can help a room feel bright and airy, but this does not mean that small space dwellers should limit themselves to only neutral or even commit to neutral colours on larger impact items like walls or furniture.  Pops of colour bring personality to a space and make it feel anything but small. Don't be afraid to use colour, just make sure your find a balance that works in your space.

Myth No. 4 - Avoid Pattern

Now this couldn't be more wrong! Pattern does not make a room feel smaller any more than colour does. It's not the use of pattern that matters but how the pattern is used. When decorating with multiple patterns in a small space try to work with patterns that link together. Meaning work with patterns that either have similar colour scheme or print. Then use one of the colour in the print to anchor on the wall or rug. It's an easy way to build a dynamic small space.

The Tuft

Happy Monday Small Space Dwellers! Along my shopping travels I've been seeing tufted everything and rightfully so! It's back! Well I don't think it ever really left, but it is definitely running ramped in stored this season.

I absolutely love tufted pieces! I mean, it just brings this certain kinda sexy to anything... well almost everything...lol. It instantly add interest to a place and raises the elegance factor a couple notches. Take a look at some great tufted looks that made my mouth water.

I've also included a "Tufted for Less" section at the end of my post, because we all know how painfully expensive a good piece of tuft is. Now you can get the look for less!

Get the Tuft for Less

When I saw this STRANDMON tufted armchair in the new Ikea Catalogue I knew it would be a struggle for me to keep my hands and wallet off. This is a new rendition of an old favourite, the 1951 MK armchair, which sold at Ikea for many years. Now 61 years later that have brought it back with new life. Price: $279

This tufted armless chair can be found a Home Sense. It has a super romantic look with it's rolled back and wood/brass wheeled legs. The black ribbon found between the seat and back can be used to accessorize the chair with a bow. Price: $199

Now this tops them all! Sure it needs some help... but for the price it can't be beat. This baby was found at my local Value Village. I would remove the skirt to expose it's legs and add some gold details to cap the legs for a modern man's cigar room look. Price $20
